Learn more about the Northern Circuite route in Kilimanjaro.

The Northern Circuit Route on Kilimanjaro spans a 9-day journey, initially ascending the Lemosho route on the mountain’s western side to the Shira Plateau. It then veers north, encircling the main summit in a clockwise direction by joining the Rongai route for the summit ascent from the eastern side and descending via the southern Mweka route.

Considered the newest and arguably the best route up Mount Kilimanjaro, the Northern Circuit combines the best features of other trails into an extraordinary hike. Offering stunning scenery, ample solitude, a rewarding challenge, and the chance to spot wildlife, this route stands out as an exceptional choice.

Following the same path as the Lemosho route initially, the Northern Circuit diverges to little-used northern trails, providing a tranquil atmosphere at the campsites, away from other trekkers. Its extended length allows trekkers to experience more of the mountain, encompassing the awe-inspiring Shira Plateau, glimpses of Kibo Peak, and Uhuru Summit along the way.

The Northern Circuit route boasts the highest success rate of 98%, making it the route with the highest summit success rate on Kilimanjaro. It approaches from the mountain’s southern side and provides a spectacular 360-degree view of the terrain.

Commencing at Londorossi Gate, the trek ascends the mountain’s western flanks, passing through the rainforest and ascending the Shira Ridge. It then heads north, circling clockwise, passing Moir Hut, Buffalo Camp, and finally reaching School Hut. Trekkers circumnavigate Kilimanjaro almost entirely before summiting from the east.

Despite its numerous advantages, the downside of the Northern Circuit route is its extended duration, typically requiring nine or more days, making it less feasible for many travelers. However, those who embark on this trail find the experience wholly worthwhile.
